  1.    The tissues of the endocrine system function 
  2. to secrete chemical messengers known as hormones. 
  3. While all cells release chemicals capable of affecting
  4. other cells, hormones are released in a regular 
  5. manner by tissues specialized for their production 
  6. and have very specific effects on specifically 
  7. targeted tissues in the body.  Thus, hormones are the 
  8. chemical control mechanisms by which the endocrine 
  9. system regulates numerous life functions in the body.  
  10. Hormones are secreted and effective at very low 
  11. concentrations due to their stimulus at their cellular 
  12. targets of enzyme activity which carries out the 
  13. actual cellular response to hormone stimulation.  
  14. Hormones, which often target tissues that are far 
  15. removed from the hormones' sites of secretion, are
  16. carried to their target sites by the circulatory 
  17. system.
